Burn Your Boats: The Psychology of Total Commitment

Burn Your Boats: The Psychology of Total Commitment

There's a famous story about the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés. When he arrived in the New World, he ordered his men to burn their ships. There was no going back. The only option was forward.

This isn't just a dramatic historical anecdote — it's a powerful psychological principle that applies directly to your business.

When you keep your options open, your brain distributes its resources across multiple potential paths. This feels safe, but it's actually the most dangerous position you can be in. You end up with divided attention, diluted effort, and mediocre results across the board.

When you commit fully — when you burn your boats — something remarkable happens neurologically. Your brain's reticular activating system (RAS) focuses entirely on finding solutions within your chosen path. Obstacles that would have stopped you before become puzzles to solve.

This is why I push my coaching clients to make definitive decisions. Not reckless ones — but clear, committed ones. The power isn't in the decision itself. It's in the commitment that follows.
